DigitalIDStates.com tracks a subject that changes frequently. States launch new mobile identification programs, wallet providers expand support, and acceptance rules can differ between transportation, government, retail, and other settings. Our methodology is designed around verifiable sources, structured records, and clearly dated reviews.
Source Priority
Whenever possible, information is verified using primary sources. These generally include state motor vehicle departments, state licensing or transportation agencies, official state digital ID programs, the Transportation Security Administration, AAMVA, and official documentation published by Apple, Google, Samsung, or other providers directly involved in a feature.
Secondary sources may be used to identify a new development or locate additional documentation, but important availability and status claims are preferably confirmed against an official source before they are treated as verified.
State Status
Each jurisdiction is reviewed according to what is actually available to residents rather than what has merely been discussed. A state may have passed legislation without launching a digital credential, announced a program that is still under development, or released a digital ID that works only through a specific application or wallet.
For this reason, DigitalIDStates.com distinguishes between active availability and earlier stages such as announced, planned, pilot, or in development whenever reliable information allows that distinction.
Wallet Support
Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet, and state-specific applications are tracked separately. Support in one wallet does not imply support in another.
We check provider documentation and state sources before marking a wallet as supported. Where availability has been announced but is not yet generally accessible, the record should reflect the future or developing status rather than displaying it as fully available.
TSA and Travel Information
Digital identification at airport security is treated separately from general state availability. Having a mobile driver’s license does not automatically mean that it can be used at every airport or checkpoint.
TSA information is based primarily on current TSA guidance and, where relevant, official information from participating identification providers or state agencies. Travelers should still carry an acceptable physical identification document when required and check current TSA requirements before travel.
What “Last Verified” Means
Last Verified is the most recent date on which the key status information in a record was reviewed against the sources used by DigitalIDStates.com. It does not mean that the issuing authority updated its own program on that date.
A record can remain accurate after its verification date, but digital identity programs can change without notice. When a material change is identified, we review the affected state or feature and update the verification date after checking the new information.
Conflicting Information
Official sources do not always update at the same time. A wallet provider may announce support before a state agency changes its public documentation, or a state may announce an upcoming launch before the feature becomes available to users.
When sources conflict, we consider the nature of the claim, publication date, issuing authority, and whether the feature is actually available. We avoid presenting planned availability as a completed launch.
Corrections
Readers can report a possible error or outdated record by emailing support@digitalidstates.com. Please include the relevant DigitalIDStates.com page and, when possible, a link to an official source supporting the correction.
